Renee Montgomery made history as the first former WNBA player with team equity and an executive title, now serving as partner and Vice President of the Atlanta Dream since 2021. Check out her story of going from the court to the boardroom.

She sat out the 2020 season to focus on social justice work, a decision that reshaped her vision for change in sports.
Inspired by LeBron James’ call to action, she pursued ownership when the Dream went up for sale and joined the buying group in February 2021. That move made her the first former WNBA player with team equity (with the Atlanta Dream) and executive roles. Since 2021, she has served as a partner and Vice President.

Black History Month Player Spotlight: Renee Montgomery

From the moment she entered the league, Maya Moore didn’t just win; she defined what winning looked like.
Selected No. 1 overall by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2011 WNBA Draft following a dominant career at the University of Connecticut, Moore quickly became the centerpiece of one of the most successful eras in league history.

During her eight seasons in Minnesota from 2011 to 2018, the Lynx reached six WNBA Finals and won four championships, establishing a dynasty built on consistency, excellence, and winning at the highest level.
Her impact was immediate. In 2011, Moore became just the second player in WNBA history to win Rookie of the Year and a WNBA championship in the same season, setting the tone for a career defined by historic milestones.
Minnesota returned to the top again in 2013, when Moore led the Lynx to another title and earned WNBA Finals MVP honors. One year later, she captured league MVP after averaging a career high 23.9 points per game during the 2014 season.
The championships continued. From 2015 through 2017, the Lynx remained a dominant force, with Moore securing her third and fourth WNBA titles as Minnesota’s dynasty extended across the decade.
In 2019, Moore stepped away from basketball to focus on her work in criminal justice reform. She officially retired in 2023, leaving behind one of the most decorated careers in basketball history.
Across high school, UConn, and the WNBA, Moore built a legacy defined by championships, impact, and excellence that reached far beyond the game.

From No. 1 pick to champion across franchises, Candace Parker built a career worthy of forever.
In 2008, Parker was drafted No. 1 overall by the Los Angeles Sparks and made history, becoming the first player to win Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season.

She continued her dominance with a second MVP in 2013, then led the Sparks to a WNBA Championship in 2016, earning Finals MVP. In 2020, she capped her Los Angeles tenure as Defensive Player of the Year. Parker joined the Chicago Sky in 2021, where she earned her seventh All‑WNBA First Team selection and led the franchise to its first WNBA Championship in 2021. In 2022, she helped Chicago follow up that title run by finishing with the league’s best regular‑season record.
In 2023, she added a third WNBA title with the Las Vegas Aces. After announcing her retirement in 2024, Parker became the second player in WNBA history to have her jersey retired by two franchises, Los Angeles and Chicago, in 2025.

As the league’s first-ever No. 1 pick, Tina Thompson’s career helped define the WNBA from day one.
In 1997, the Houston Comets selected Tina Thompson with the No. 1 overall pick in the inaugural WNBA Draft, making her the first player officially drafted into the league. Between 1997 and 2000, Thompson started at forward for the Comets as they won four consecutive WNBA championships, a streak that remains the longest in league history.

During this period, she played alongside teammates Sheryl Swoopes and Cynthia Cooper-Dyke. Thompson’s tenure with the franchise spanned 12 seasons before she moved to the Los Angeles Sparks in 2009 and later the Seattle Storm in 2012.
Thompson accumulated 7,488 points and 3,070 rebounds  over 17 seasons, leading her to become the league&#8217;s All-Time leading scorer at the time of her retirement. She retained the All-Time scoring record from 2010 until 2017.
Thompson was a nine-time WNBA All-Star and an eight-time All-WNBA selection, including three First Team honors in 1997, 1998, and 2004.
On the international stage, Thompson represented the United States as a member of the Women’s National Team, winning two Olympic gold medals in 2004 (Athens) and 2008 (Beijing). She also contributed to a gold medal win at the 1998 World Championship. In 2018, she was inducted into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

In her rookie season, she set the WNBA single-season rebounding record, earned All-Star honors, and became one of only three rookies ever to lead the league in offensive rebounding.
Night after night, Angel delivered. Her seven consecutive double-doubles set a rookie record, showing her relentless force in the paint. In June 2025, Angel became the league’s second‑youngest triple‑double scorer and later tied Tina Charles for the most double‑doubles in a player’s first two seasons. In 2025, Angel Reese became the 15th player in WNBA history to receive a signature shoes.
Still early in her career, her influence is already clear: on the stat sheet, in the culture, and in what the next generation sees as possible.

Lisa Leslie entered a brand-new league in 1997 and became part of its defining moments from day one. 
Leslie entered the WNBA after being selected 7th overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in the inaugural WNBA Draft in 1997. She took the floor in the WNBA’s inaugural game on June 21, 1997, as the Los Angeles Sparks faced the New York Liberty.

 In 2001, Leslie emerged as one of the league’s defining forces, earning MVP honors and leading the Sparks to their first WNBA championship. The following year she delivered a moment that changed the game, becoming the first player in WNBA history to dunk. The Sparks built on that history, as Leslie went on to win back‑to‑back championships in 2001 and 2002 and two WNBA Finals MVPs. As her career progressed, she continued to establish her legacy, becoming the first player in league history to surpass 3,000, 4,000, and 6,000 career points.  
When Lisa Leslie retired in 2009, she left the game as the WNBA’s All-Time leader in both points and rebounds, and a pioneer whose 11-year career helped shape the league from day one.

Black History Month Player Spotlight: Lisa Leslie

Dawn Staley is a trailblazer in two arenas, breaking glass ceilings in both collegiate and professional women’s basketball. 
In 2000, Staley accepted the position of head women’s basketball coach at Temple University while concurrently playing for the Charlotte Sting. During her eight-year tenure at Temple, she balanced professional playing and coaching responsibilities, earning five WNBA All-Star selections as a point guard. Under her leadership, Temple won four Atlantic 10 conference tournament titles and made six NCAA Tournament appearances.

Staley transitioned to the University of South Carolina in 2008. Since her arrival, the program has won three NCAA National Championships (2017, 2022, and 2024). Her 2023–2024 team completed the season with a 38-0 record, becoming one of the few programs in Division I history to finish a season undefeated. As of 2024, her coaching record at South Carolina includes multiple SEC regular-season and tournament championships. 
In addition to her collegiate and WNBA career, Staley has a documented history with USA Basketball. She won three Olympic gold medals as a player (1996, 2000, 2004) and served as the head coach for the U.S. Women’s National Team during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where the team secured a Gold medal. She is the first person in USA Basketball history to win an Olympic gold medal as both a player and a Head Coach.

A&#8217;ja Wilson&#8217;s eight-year run in the league has been nothing short of phenomenal. The 2018 No. 1 overall pick has built her career into a yearly showcase of Black history not just in the WNBA, but basketball altogether.
Take a look at Wilson’s era of dominance, shattering records and becoming the W’s only 4x MVP.
In 2018, the Las Vegas Aces selected A’ja Wilson with the first overall pick in the WNBA Draft. In her debut season, Wilson averaged 20.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game, resulting in her selection as the 2018 WNBA Rookie of the Year and a member of the WNBA All-Rookie Team.

Her statistical production continued over subsequent seasons, leading to back-to-back WNBA championships with the Aces in 2022 and 2023. During this period, she earned two WNBA Most Valuable Player awards (2020, 2022) and consecutive Defensive Player of the Year honors (2022, 2023). 
During the 2024 season, Wilson became the first player in WNBA history to score 1,000 points in a single regular season. She finished the year leading the league in total points (1,021) and blocks (98), while ranking second in rebounds (451), which led to her third career MVP award. In 2025, Wilson secured her fourth WNBA MVP, surpassing the previous record of three held by Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, and Lauren Jackson. That same year, she shared the Defensive Player of the Year award with Alanna Smith and led the Las Vegas Aces to their third championship in four seasons, where she was also named the WNBA Finals MVP. 
As of the conclusion of the 2025 season, the 29-year-old Wilson holds the WNBA record for the most career MVP awards (4) and is the only player in league history to win a scoring title, a league championship, Finals MVP, regular-season MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year in a single season.
