The W in Designer: Stylist Mary Gonsalves Kinney and the Inner Power Behind Cameron Brink's Outfits
Los Angeles Sparks player Cameron Brink has undeniably impacted the league’s style with her effortless California girl approach to style. Aided by her longtime stylist, Mary Gonsalves Kinney, the duo is undaunted by the fan excitement or rising sartorial expectations for the WNBA. In fact, Kinney shares that she’s “half-jokingly said to Cameron it is my job and her job to give the people what they want.”
Having met through Kinney’s other clients, Ayesha Curry and Sonya Curry, they first connected for an ESPYS styling around two years ago. While finding a stylist during college feels like an unusual move, the duo has tapped into Brink’s youth as a driver of her style. “Cameron is young, so she likes to dress her age with finesse and power,” explains Kinney.
Dressing Brink in Stella McCartney for the John R. Wooden Award in 2023 and in Balmain for this year’s draft, Kinney holds a powerful network from working all over the country and being ‘on contract with every luxury brand in the world.’ Noting that Brink is now her first WNBA player, Kinney runs through the fundamentals of Brink’s style:
Kirsten Chen: You’ve been working with Cameron for two years now. How has the styling process changed from college to the WNBA?
Mary Gonsalves Kinney: I honestly can say the styling ethos and direction has remained consistent. Cameron has an impeccable eye and loves to be cutting-edge and different. From the very beginning, we have had high expectations of who she wore and why she was wearing them. Cameron follows her gut on what makes her feel the most beautiful and powerful, and I believe that shows in every wardrobe opportunity she has had– even in college.
KC: How did the two of you figure out the vision for Cameron’s style this season?
MGK: When we style her, we want her to always have some element that makes her stand out and get noticed, but in a polished way. She has the physique of a goddess, so it is not hard to make her look good if I’m being honest.
KC: Tell me about some of your and Cameron’s favorite brands, trends, or pieces.
MGK: Cameron loves YSL, Balmain, Givenchy, Versace, Stella McCartney, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, and all the big names, but she also loves discovering smaller brands that are building their name in the industry like Andre Emery, Frolov, Christopher Esber.
KC: How does playing in Los Angeles impact her styling?
MGK: Los Angeles is a hotbed of fashion because of the Hollywood piece, but just because there are celebrities doesn’t mean they’re all well dressed. Being in Los Angeles, where there is so much going on– public-facing red-carpet events and celebrities– we have our own fashion playground to showcase Cameron’s looks and show Hollywood that this WNBA player is a threat on and off the court.
KC: What is Cameron’s go-to style for a lazy, away game?
MGK: Cargo jeans and a crop top with sneakers.
KC: What’s your secret superpower as a stylist?
MGK: Intuition and authenticity.
Editor’s note: In addition to Mary Gonsalves Kinney, stylist Sydney Bordonaro is also working on Cameron Brink’s tunnel outfits this season.
