Gift of Life Game, Aug. 9 vs. Chicago

Shock Support Gift of Life

Alexis Hornbuckle, the 2008 WNBA steals leader, knows all about taking away. But the Detroit Shock second-year guard also knows how to give back, which is why shes serving as the team spokesperson for the Gift of Life and its minority outreach program, MOTTEP, in 2009.

Founded in 1993 with a Detroit branch added two years later, MOTTEP (Minority Organ and Tissue Transplant Education Program) is the first national organization designed to educate minority communities about organ/tissue donation and transplantation. It aims to address the No. 1 problem in transplantation - the dwindling number of organ and tissue donors.

On May 20, Alexis spoke at Gift of Lifes 2009 Lifesavers Breakfast to encourage everyone to get in the game and help save lives by adding his or her name to the Michigan Organ Donor Registry. See photos from the breakfast to the right.

You too can become an organ/tissue donor simply by visiting the link below, which will let Gift of Life know you heard about organ donation through the Detroit Shock: www.giftoflifemichigan.org.

To support Alexis and Gift of Life you can attend the Shock game at The Palace Aug. 9 against the Chicago Sky, which will include a Gift of Life seating section in the lower level. Register for organ/tissue donation and receive a $38 seat for only $20! To purchase tickets simply fax this registration form to Samantha Hicks at 248.377.3260.

Gift of Life members will also take part in a Family Fun Tunnel and Ball Exchange before the game. Bring proof of your organ/tissue donation to the game and you also will receive a free Gift of Life T-shirt (while supplies last). Support a great cause while enjoying some great basketball!

Jennifer Tislerics, special events and partnership coordinator for Gift of Life Michigan, invited Alexis to speak at the Lifesavers Breakfast.
