“It’s important that kids stay active and be fit,” said Katie Smith, Shock guard and six-time WNBA All-Star. “Playing sports is a great way for youth to have fun and burn some calories at the same time.”
As part of the WNBA’s “Be Fit, Be Smart, Be Yourself” initiative and WNBA Cares, Shock players want youth to participate in the clinic for a great afternoon of entertainment, basketball, fitness and fun. The purpose is to boost confidence in young people and give them valuable tips on how to live a healthy life by eating right and exercising. Also, individuals can discover how to make small, necessary changes that will enhance their self-image and health.
The Sterling Heights “Be Fit” clinic is in conjunction with the Shock “Community Nights” program, which benefits residents and organizations in Sterling Heights. For every $6 lower-level ticket bought, the Shock will donate $1 to the Sterling Heights Parks & Recreation Department in order to benefit Dodge Park. There will also be a Sterling Heights Community Night at the Aug. 11 game at 1:30 p.m. where fans can participate in a post-game shot on the court.
Be sure to participate in this clinic with Shock players before they embark on their journey to defend their WNBA Champion title in the 2007 WNBA Playoffs. If your youth organization is interested in participating or if you have any questions, please contact Shock Community Relations Coordinator Hela Sheth at (248) 377-4055. The first 150 youth who pre-register will receive a complimentary “Be Fit” t-shirt and a nutrition and fitness guide the day of the event.
Shock “Be Smart, Be Fit, Be Yourself” is presented by Air Master, Lennox, Detroit Medical Center, National City, Bell Tire, Medical Weight Loss Clinic, Blue Cross Blue Shield and T&C Federal Credit Union.
Air Master is the presenting sponsor for the 2007 Detroit Shock. For more information about the Detroit Shock or to purchase tickets for any upcoming Shock game, call 248-377-0100 or go online at www.detroitshock.com.
