Mike Thibault On The Washington Mystics Getting The No. 2 Overall Pick In WNBA Draft 2017

The Washington Mystics missed out on the playoffs this season for the first time since 2012, but the results of tonight’s Draft Lottery should help soften that blow.

Based on their record over the past two seasons, the Mystics had the fourth-highest odds to land the No. 1 overall pick. They didn’t jump all the way up to the top, but they did vault into the No. 2 slot. That will be the highest the Mystics have drafted since back in 2009, when they used the No. 2 overall pick in that draft to select Marissa Coleman.

That, of course, was welcome news to Washington Mystics head coach and general manager, Mike Thibault.

As he told WNBA.com, “It’s a big deal for our team going forward. We’re young and we’re trying to add good players.”

Free agency doesn’t do a lot of that in this league as compared to the NBA,” he continued. “The draft is one of the biggest methods. And for us to get the number 2 pick it guarantees we’re gonna get a good player if we do our homework that can impact where we’re headed.”

The current players were excited as well.

As for who Hartley and company’s new teammate will be, Coach Thibault has a lot of work to do to figure that out. With the entire college basketball season still to play, he noted that there’s “a lot of homework to be done and a lot of miles to be put in watching college kids practice.”

Understandably, he’s keeping that list of players close to the vest, but Thibault did note that the Mystics–who already have a strong post duo in Stefanie Dolson and Emma Meesseman–may be looking to add another perimeter player.

“We’re probably gonna be able to find a scorer on the perimeter in this draft, he said. “We’ve been streaky on the perimeter but we started to address that last year by drafting Kahleah Copper, a big small forward who can score and play on the wing. And probably we would look at that again too.”

The WNBA Draft 2017 isn’t until April, however, so plans are sure to change. One thing that’s for sure, however, is that the Mystics are sure to enter the 2017 WNBA season with new young and talented player.
