Look Back At The Regular Season Meetings Between The Lynx And Sparks

The Minnesota Lynx and the Los Angeles Sparks, the league’s two best teams all season long, have survived and advanced to the WNBA Finals. This is the fifth Finals in six years for the Lynx, who are looking for their fourth title, which would tie the Houston Comets for the most all time. As for the Sparks, it’s their first trip to the Finals since 2003. Though the franchise lost that year, L.A. does have two championships, winning in 2001 and 2002.

Starting with their brilliant first matchup of the year back in June, take a look back at the three regular season meetings between the clubs.

Game 1 (June 21): Lynx 72, Sparks 69

Both teams entered the game undefeated — the Lynx 12-0 and the Sparks 11-0 — marking the first time in professional sports history in which two undefeated teams with at least 10 wins met.

The “Battle of the Unbeatens” did not disappoint, turning into arguably the game of the year, with Minnesota’s Renee Montgomery knocking down a game-winning three-pointer with 2.9 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Game 2 (June 24): Sparks 94, Lynx 76

Just a few days after their instant classic, the future WNBA finalists met again. This time, the game wasn’t quite as close, as the Sparks ran away with things in the fourth quarter for a 19-point victory.

Kristi Toliver was on fire from downtown in this one, knocking down 7 of 11 three-pointers on the way to what would be a season-high 25 points.

Game 3 (September 6): Lynx 77, Sparks 74

The third and final meeting between these two in the regular season was just about a month ago, and for the third time in a row, it was the road team coming away victorious.

This game also went down to the wire, although no one could have expected that in the final few minutes. Down 10 with 1:04 remaining, the Sparks cut the Lynx’s lead to just two points before Lindsay Whalen went to the line to seal the deal for Minnesota.
