To Fever forward and two-time WNBA All-Star Katie Douglas, the need to support fellow Hoosiers in need has never been greater.
Douglas, a native of Indianapolis’ south side, visited with recent flood victims at an American Red Cross shelter in Franklin, Indiana on Tuesday, June 17.
She is part of the continuing effort of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, the Indiana Pacers and the Indiana Fever to support recent flood and tornado victims in Indiana.
“I’m getting an up-close, clear picture of the situation in central Indiana. This is very dear to my heart, because I’m from this area, and I can’t begin to imagine what it must be like for everyone here,” says Douglas.
Douglas signed autographs, delivered bottled water and visited with some of the over 5,000 affected people since severe weather struck the area May 30. The Franklin shelter, alone, has served nearly 1,000 cases per day.
One proud Fever fan told Katie that she attends every home game and like Douglas, is a Purdue alum herself. Another couple requested autographs for their seven children at home. One couple clutched a 12-day old baby girl, born on Thursday, June 6, two days before heavy flooding began, and forced to remain in the hospital while the family’s home was besieged by rising water.
In news interviews outside the shelter, Douglas encouraged the giving of donations by Fever fans to American Red Cross volunteers at the Indiana Fever’s home game on Wednesday, June 18 (7:00 p.m.). Red Cross volunteers will be accepting donations in the Main Concourse of Conseco Fieldhouse.
The Red Cross has already spent $1.8 million in assisting families in the area and has raised an additional $1.2 million so far.
Together with Pacers Sports & Entertainment, who recently donated $50,000 to the cause, Fever fans can help make a difference for fellow Hoosier families in need.
